The recent Newsweek article, "Generation Diva: How our obsession with beauty is changing our kids" brings attention to a trend that is quickly growing out of control, as girls try to keep up with what they see on "reality" TV and in advertising. The result is damaging to their self-worth and does not send the message that they are created in God's image and likeness - not to mention the massive amounts of time and money that go towards this endless pursuit (a lifetime of cosmetic maintenance will cost a modern diva nearly half a million dollars). I find it very sad to see our society going in the direction of shallow vanity rather than affirming the value of the human person and helping people live a more complete and authentically human life. God help us!
